Behind the Scenes at a Recruiting Agency: How to Get Your Resume Noticed
Whenever you’re looking to make a career move – whether it’s your first job, a step up, or different direction entirely – updating your resume is the first step. If you’re feeling a little intimidated by this task, we’ve got your back. As a prominent temp and recruiting agency in southern Maine, we see dozens of resumes a day and have some insider tips on how to get noticed in a crowded marketplace.
A resume that sets you apart
A resume is essentially your professional snapshot, and you only get one chance to make that crucial first impression. So let’s start where the hiring managers start – the introduction.
Start with a concise executive summary
If you had to sum up your entire career and skills in a few sentences, what would it look like? Resist the temptation to make your executive summary a novel and instead highlight your industry experience, pivotal roles and accomplishments, and proven specialties.
Keep your experience section relevant and recent
In this section you should hone in on measurable accomplishments (the more measurable the better!). Focus on only the most relevant and noteworthy skills, and include your past job experience in reverse chronological order, putting your most recent experience first. Unless the experience is directly relevant to the job you’re applying for, you can probably skip over positions you held more than 15 years ago. Remember, a great resume is compelling and concise – keep this section focused on experience that has best prepared you for your future job placement.
Make sure your resume design is modern and spotless
Today’s resumes are clean, concise, and easy to digest. Unless you’re applying for a creative position, stick to a traditional format that is:
- Up-to-date and easy to read. Make sure you use legible fonts in a large enough size to read without having to zoom in on the text.
- Error-free. Proofread your resume at least three times (and then ask a friend to do the same) before the final version is saved.
- Saved as a PDF file. Word documents (especially with resume formats) can get wonky across different computers, so saving your resume as a PDF file ensures that it will be seen exactly how it was intended!
Don’t forget about the cover letter
Your resume can (and should) provide just the facts. Your cover letter is where you get to really tell your story. Use this opportunity to provide insight into your personality and why you are seeking a new job or career. Help employers understand more clearly the skills that you bring to the table, both professionally and personally, and give context to your most relevant experience.
Consider a temporary position
If the experience section of your resume is a little light, or you’re having trouble getting the “in” you need at a desired employer, a temp position is often the fastest fix. Many of Maine’s top employers use temp positions as a way to gauge fit of future permanent employees – essentially, an extended (and paid!) interview.
Most importantly, a temporary position is a paid way to come up to speed in today’s working world, allowing you to learn new skills, gain valuable experience and make industry connections that can help you secure the perfect permanent position down the road.
